History of the Music & Imagery Association of Australia

The Music and Imagery Association of Australia (MIAA) was established in 1994 with the late Dr Helen Bonny (pictured left) as the patroness and became a Member Association of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) in 2000.
MIAA incorporates the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) which was founded by Dr Bonny (1921-2010), a psychologist and qualified Music Therapist, at the Maryland Psychological Research Centre, USA, in the 1970s. The Bonny Method of GIM has been practised around Australia since 1985.
The Bonny Method of GIM uses recorded classical music as a profound catalyst for the imagination. In psychotherapy, participants create and journey through “new worlds” as a unique expression of the depths of psyche and current issues. The Bonny Method of GIM is a potent synergy of verbal, music and art therapy with a standard form used in a series of individually tailored psychotherapy sessions. Based on the seminal work of Dr Bonny, the Bonny Method of GIM is now practised in Australia and internationally.
